Smashing the Rubber Guard?

Uploaded by: Submissions101
Video Description:
This is my opinion on a video that some of us saw on the net recently. I should note, before you get your panties in an uproar, that this isn't an attack on the instructor or his overall skill. It was just some points which we saw that were incorrect in the application of the rubber guard.
I am sure with some tweaks, the application could get better.

ye cool but like i said the dude just done it on the spur of the moment, just to get it out there.makes no difference to coathanger which way round u hold ankle.
u need ur hand on ya forarm with ur other hand as a knife edge in the throat, not on the shoulder!!
im a fan of rubber guard and used it alot in comp with sucess till i damaged my knee, but the coat hanger really is good if u play it correct!great defence!
like i said karl the coach in vid rolled with eddie an so have i & defended it

rubber guard isnt a 100 percent guard. its just another guard, theirs no need to be close minded. learn it even if its not your go to.

well said. No person who does 10p will say it is the end all be all...just be open minded and make your jits your own. Add stuff to it. jiu Jitsu is like LEGO, keep building until you have something. Tear it down when you want to. You don't have to follow the plans all the time. There is variety...that is what makes it special.

Kenny I think that you and the british guy could agree that all submissions in randori or shiai is spur of the moment. You have to take what uke gives you and what I think that Submissions101 is tryin to get across is to practice perfect technique always so that you are playing how you practice even if it is spur of the moment your doing it properly.

I like that you guys are not dogmatic in your approach in response to these videos(or in general). Dogma is something that has plagued martial arts for a long time. Progression > "tradition". While basics are still rooted in tradition, many martial arts/artists are unwilling to accept new things. I see this as a serious problem throughout the martial arts world. As always, thanks for the video.

okay... this by far is my favorite go to guard!!! but i am having problems with it. sometimes when I have them on mission control, zombie, and new york ...my opponent tends to pick me up and slams me to break it.. is there anyway i can prevent him from being able to slam me?? a sweep maybe??? I kept thinking THE ASYLUM but what else can i do??? i've gotten so close from pulling a gogoplata or straight jacket on him, its just he knows what to expect so he immediately try to break out of the guard

Appreciate that you are sticking up for your coach and gym (I was never slagging either). You're right too, not everything will work for all people all the time. I am also pointing out that the rubber guard wasn't set up right in the video. I've heard GOOD things about your coach and your gym. Its just out take on things-that's all. Keep training and have fun-that's the point.

hey bro I have alot of respect 4 the gracies I study them as well but through what I've seen the way 10th planet breaks down every minor movement, and then they give it an unforgettable name to go with it..It makes the move almost photographic.I give them props 4 that..If I'm not mistaken it was joe rogan that mentioned the different sect (and I believe he said it was ALMOST A DIFF SECT).MAYBE I'm wrong I'm still learning as well!!
1. use you hip leg ... ( 4 weeks ago by reverseinfinity)
1. use you hip leg to push your partner away when he tries to slam you. 2. if he's stacking you really hard, walk on your shoulders backwards before he completely takes away your leverage.remember no guard system is stack-proof. 3. arch your back to keep him from stacking. 4. keep everything tight. very important.
5. try the carni ... ( 4 weeks ago by reverseinfinity)
5. try the carni when he stacks. i've gotten a couple of those. i've even let the guy pass my hip leg, then clear the neck (while he's standing up) and force him back down and submitted him. 6. sweeps: half-butterfly sweep, pendulum sweep, foot sweep. these might require you to actually give up the rubber guard and play a more traditional open guard. 7. if the full guard if just not working, transition to butterfly guard or even half guard. hope my bit helped
