Excellent! Another way i teach my students is to use the "Hamburger" viewspoint. The top bun is the Introduction, the lettuce, meat and cheese is the Body, (the three main points) and the bottom bun is the Conclusion. Rephrse and review your Body in the Conclusion. Happy Hamburger!

I teach freshmen composition at a public university. I have discovered that the five paragraph essays are the bane of my existence. This is not a suitable format for most of the writing the students will encounter in a "real" classroom experience! I've had to break them of the habit of writing a five paragraph essay because there's no room for expansion.

Spassgrl, This video is not titled "How to write an Essay". I don't think Lisa Bryde says that this is the "only" way to write "all essay" formats. She specifically providing a "how to" on 5 paragraph essays. True, it is one of the most basic ways to an essay. However, you can see from the previous comments, a lot of people do not know how to do it, or have trouble with it. From this fundamental style many students eventually break away into more contemporary and progressive styles of writing.

I think it's okay to have more or less, given the amount of points that you mention in your thesis statement, or if you only have 3 main topics, but you have a lot of info for each topic, you can group the first 2 paragraphs for topic-1, 3 paragraphs for topic-2, & perhaps 2 paragraphs for topic-3.
