Neither team's offense could make any big plays. Despite the final score, this game was basically the Siesta Bowl of 2006, neither team could move the ball. PSU led 3-0 at halftime and had to settle for a second field goal thanks to a penalty. Despite the final scores, PSU played OSU closer than Michigan did or at least as close. The only other game this tight that year was the Penn State vs Michigan game.

well the point differential in the OSU-UM game was 3 -- in this one it was what, eight? they were both about as close feeling-wise though. i disagree on the PSU-UM game, that didn't have a very close feel until the end, when PSU put on pressure (Hunt finally broke one open).
The Michigan game ... ( 6 months ago by MVillani1985)
The Michigan game vs OSU felt about as close as the spread. But the PSU vs OSU game felt a lot closer than the spread. A false start prevented a touchdown from PSU and a Hail Mary from Troy Smith to avoid a sack was a lucky touchdown, so IMO it felt a lot closer than the 14-6 score it was meant to be. Could have very easily been 10-7 PSU, or 17-7 PSU. The Michigan game was a weird one. It felt close for awhile, lost the feeling later on, and was close again with a touchdown.
And Penn State then ... ( 6 months ago by MVillani1985)
And Penn State then forced Michigan into a surprisingly quick three-and-out (I think only their third three-and-out of the night). Penn State then got the ball back, but Paul Cianciolo ran out of magic. The decision to throw two Hail Marys at 3rd and 1 and 4th and 1 was kinda boneheaded, though. I'd have just gotten the first down on the ground, then that would have been a great setup for four consecutive chances.

Hard to do that on your third string QB or whoever it was lol
That did make it ... ( 6 months ago by MVillani1985)
That did make it tougher, but Paul Cianciolo still played like a man on a mission, instead of how a third stringer usually plays when against such a powerful defense. But I think PSU should have converted the 2nd and 1, called a timeout, then worried about throwing four straight Hail Mary passes.
Love them or hate them, one thing you have to admire about Penn State is the fact that they never simply give up, no matter how grim the situation.
For example, ... ( 6 months ago by MVillani1985)
For example, against Notre Dame (totally unwinnable, at least we had a chance in the Michigan game), the score was 41-10. Penn State used a timeout to punch in a late TD to make it 41-17, then called an onside kick. And this past year, against Ohio State, Derrick Williams ran in an admittedly useless kickoff return for a touchdown.
Personally, I was most disappointed with the collapse against Michigan State because we started playing not to lose, turning a 24-7 laugher into a 35-31 loss.
