cutting off their tails is called "docking" and is now illegal in the UK, it was traditionally done in working dogs, like spaniels etc, to stop their tails getting caught in branches and fences, so they could catch the prey,
but other breeds, like rottweilers and dobermans' tails were docked because it was a breed requirement.
as said before, it is now illegal to do it in the UK and all vets will refuse to do it. however, there are still puppy breeders out there who will do it themselves.
