The worst protest song of all time is "The Universal Soldier" by Buffy Sainte Marie. This song even goes so far as to suggest that atrocities committed at the Dachau concentration camp were the work of soldiers (The camp was set up and run by civilians).
Thank God that the Universal Soldier prevailed to save us from the Universal Stormtrooper or the Universal Chekist!
Jan and Dean's "The Universal Coward" (1965) provides a good antidote to Buffy's opus.

Thank you for this piece of information. What you ´re citing seems to indicate a different kind of madness and helps me fairly assessing J&D ´s (or merely J´s) song. Still, I don´t like musicians posing as uncalled-for politicians. From a strictly musical POV, though, even Universal Coward is very pleasing. Brian Wilson started to write it then he couldn't find a way to finish it and he was tired of the Beach Boys just doing surf songs, so when Dean Torrance asked could Jan and Dean have the Beach Boys song Surfin' USA, he said no, but offered them Surf City instead and Jan Berry finished it with Jan on vocals and Dean Torrance and Brian Wilson on backing vocals. Jan and Brian also co-produced it.
