The first recording of this tune was by the callahan brothers in the 1930's but its much older than that.The general thinking is that its based on an English ballad called 'matty groves' which makes sense as its strikingly similar.Its bloody good whoever wrote it.

The first album was one of his best. My oldest brother owned it and this is my first time (in the early '60s) I ever listened to American Folk music. It's hard to believe that is nearing 45-50 years ago. Tell flies.

this song has roots that date back before his fathers father was a twinkle in an eye.
