Yes there is - check out Percy Grainger's fantastic arrangement for piano.

I'm sure it started as a very instinctive response to something audiences heard and were moved by, just as it should be and usually is today

What a truly heartfelt version of Danny Boy, After listening to that, one finds himself at a loss for words and filled with goosebumps. This truly is a wonderful posting. Thanks.

Someone posted the comment: this isn't jazz. For the record, this IS jazz harmony to the highest form. What you're hearing in Jarrett's beautiful interpretation is a total reconstruction of this tune, that by now almost everyone is familiar with, and taken to a whole new level. All by way of jazz reharmonization. Mr. Jarrett is a master of reharmonization in even the simplest of tunes. Where's my proof? Simply, listen...

he's improvising on the harmonic structure of the tune to be sure.

very well said....man, this is YT...you find messages with people saying that Kenny G is a master of the universe and John Coltrane didn't know how to play and had no chops... I almost can't believe the guy wrote that this "isn't jazz...this is proper music"!! My gosh...2008...and some of us behave like neanderthals...

something more beautiful than this is YET to be created...

ok, i just listened to clapton, george benson, daniel kolbialka, keith, and johnny cash with jimmy rodgers...each rendition a masterpiece. each totally different. and i'm sure there are another fifty or so equally great other versions. wow. we are blessed to be alive in a time when such a wealth of riches is available to all with a few mouse clicks...'i'll be there in sunlight or in shadow...' oh yeah.

dude, as much as i would like to agree with you, i still think the a masterpiece has some very specific qualities. I do think Keithe Jarrett's rendition of this tune is indeed a masterpiece. I was listening to other interpretations which are great, but I personally wouldn't call masterpieces. It's just my opinion, of course.

Keith makes them all sound like amateurs, which they are. If you disagree, something is wrong with you.

I'm always saying that in my head. I feel guilty when I say that but, DAMN. He's good!!!!

Yeah, he is good, but the ridiculous theatrics detract from the great playing. Just not necessary.

jazz is like light music, easy going, you know, supposed to be fun.. not as serious as hes playing this

I know a lot of people who feel the same way, but that's just who Keith is. He's an egotistical asshole showman who makes absolutely amazing music. And I love his music.
This isn't jazz. ... ( 1 week ago by poqoia)
This isn't jazz. It's contemporary musical self expression through a fusion of improvisation and interpretation of a piece. This classifies as jazz only because at first glance, jazz is the closest resemblance to this, and people need to know which section of the music store to go to find Keith Jarrett cds.
It's not a show, ... ( 1 week ago by poqoia)
It's not a show, it's an event. To be truly in touch with rhythm or to make the music flow and be soulful, it HAS to make you dance, or you're not doing it right. Keith Jarrett isn't trying to impress us with his incredible dance moves. His consciousness is completely focused on expressing the song's depth. To keep your body from doing what it should naturally do when listening or creating music sabotages the creation and the appreciation.
Gregorian chants? ... ( 1 week ago by wil555)
Gregorian chants? The Brahms Requiem? A Tchaikovsky piano concerto? Have fun dancing to these flowing pieces.
I won't be dancing ... ( 1 week ago by poqoia)
I won't be dancing hip hop style to those kinds of pieces, but if I play them or listen to them, they should make feel like a flag dancing with the wind or a boat rocking in the water. Music should make you feel very light. But maybe that's just me.

How about... music should make you feel. ?
Whoa! I ... ( 5 days ago by shas1814)
Whoa! I accidentally gave you a thumbs down. Sorry. I agree with your comment completely. It isn't an "act", it's part of the creation of his art, so it's part of the art he's creating also. I love it when a musician cares so much. Ever watch Eric Clapton make his funny faces? But who in their right mind would change how he plays? Just relax, close your eyes if you like, and appreciate the man's passionate music.

You articulated that very well. Wish I'd said it :=)
Uhm... What the ... ( 5 days ago by lurion)
Uhm... What the hell? Says who? How is it "supposed" to be anything? I think jazz (as any music) can be whatever the interpreter wants it to be, regardless of it's history.
