Don was always funny with Johny Carson. But they were friends. Problem with him is that he hasn't mellowed at all. Makes it hard to take him these days. A lot does just fall flat--it's not funny anymore. A lot of stars would refuse to do the Carson show if they knew he was going to be on. I've seen some stuff when he's just downright cruel.

Hi Ginger. Don is from Sunnyside, Queens. That is the style of banter. Anyone who grew up around there would think it is mild compared to what people really do to each other in that neck of the woods. Don is funny because he is saying what most people would think but not dare to say and he is quick. When he first started no one got it. If you are not made of steel then I would not go near the Carson show. johnny was no wimp either when he was in the clubs.

My dad went to his show, and someone told Don my dad looked like him, he brought him on stage and asked my dad "what does the Doctor mean before your name?" and my dad said "it means I am smarter than you" I guess Don went nuts laughing and invited him back after the show. We still have the signed picture he gave us, "to the guy smarter than the funny Jew". My dad told me he could not have been nicer after the show.

The great thing about Rickles I think is his unique personality. He can make just about anything funny. For example the last joke about Bob Newhart hitting the bell. I still don't quite get the joke but when Rickles says it and he has that grin it still kills every time.
