An interesting duet. Jimmie Rodgers, one of the best voices ever in music, and Johny Cash, of the worst voices to be the most successful. God bless them both for the heart and soul of the their musical contributions that touched us all.

The writer was called Frederick Weatherly, an English lawyer, he modified to fit the Derry Air in 1913. Strange that Irish Americans will love this song on the one hand and hate England aka "the brits" on the other.

I never said he LIKED it but he WAS a slave trader...search video..amazing grace history/"amazing grace by whitley phipps...to summarize..whitley recount the history of "negro spirituals" and states that it has been regarded that the melody of the song came from an overheard african song of mourning, and as he wrote the lyrics the melody came to him from that experience. I shall also quote another source next comment...peace
part 1..John Newton ... ( 2 months ago by disizbilly)
part 1..John Newton was born in London July 24, 1725, the son of a commander of a merchant ship which sailed the Mediterranean. When John was eleven, he went to sea with his father and made six voyages with him before the elder Newton retired. In 1744 John was impressed into service on a man-of-war, the H. M. S. Harwich. Finding conditions on board intolerable, he deserted but was soon recaptured and publicly flogged and demoted from midshipman to common seaman.
