Peter Cook & Dudley Moore - 'North Circular' sketch

Uploaded by: nonstopdancer
Video Description:
This is the 'North Circular' sketch from Peter Cook & Dudley Moore's BBC Show 'Not Only But Also'.
The sketch as originally transmitted featured the Beatles song "I'm A Loser" in the background, but the song was removed in all but the very first video release of 'Not Only But Also'. This version has the original Beatles soundtrack.

Pete and Dud are both great in this. The 'sauce tasting' scene cracks me up every single time.

Ha ha, how I love this sketch. British 'cuisine' was a hoot at that time. Thank God it's improved so much since then. Peter Cook is one of the unsung or at least 'under-sung' geniuses of British comedy.

Great stuff. I love it when the origional soundtrack - its not always possible to clear stuff (especially beatles music) Is it me, or is there a very definate Cook/Moore Lennon/Mcartney parallel? Cook/Lennon- origionals, sharp, witty, anti-establishment, dry, bitter; funny philosiphical as anything- could do virtually anything but only in their own way Moore/Macartney- possibly better as foils to another genius- hugely talented, more 'mainstream'- extremly musical- maybe more natural

What a refreshing change to see some intelligent comedy- unlike crude contemporary smut like "Little Britain" which derives its so-called humour almost exclusively from bodily functions & mental or physical illness or old age!
Perfect observation ... ( 11 months ago by cawleym1)
Perfect observation. I went to Peter Cook's memorial Service. His wife invited me. All the great comics were there. This lot we've got now, with the exception of Mitchell and Web, are trash.
What a great honour ... ( 11 months ago by nimos1)
What a great honour! That must have been a fascinating experience. What on earth has happened to the rapier-like wit of humourists like Peter Cook & Dudley Moore? Just about the only comedian I find interesting & amusing these days is Russell Brand. I haven't heard of Mitchell & Webb.
Yes, it was a truly ... ( 11 months ago by cawleym1)
Yes, it was a truly great honour. Can you imagine being under the same roof as all the Monty Python team and Spike Milligan. As I walked in, Alan Bennet was in the queue behind me. It was a very moving and funny event. Dudley Moore sang "Goodbye" with Peter Cooks old school.
All that lot and "little old me". Had to go to the pub after. Great Day. Russel Brand is very talented so I have revised my list. Mitchell and Webb are on TV and radio. Vgood. Cheers

Hey giles422 - ... ( 8 months ago by nonstopdancer)
Hey giles422 - sorry, I didn't see this comment until now for some reason. Alas, I do not have the entire show. This is taken from 'The Best of What's Left of Not Only But Also' VHS. The fact that the entire run of this show does not exist any more makes me extremely unhappy. I'm a fan of the Dudley Moore Trio, and it pains me that the BBC felt their performances were not worth keeping. C'est la vie.
